Texture Tuesday::Wonderful Whites

by heatherkp

I haven’t done Texture Tuesday’s lately where I share here and over at Kim Klassen’s Cafe some images I post process with Kim’s great textures. Today’s been rainy and I’ve been in a creative mood listening to blues and jazz so I was inspired to share some of the wonderful flowers I’ve enjoyed this spring and summer here in Charleston and up at Brookgreen Gardens.   Each has two layers of textures (reverie & love in layers). I don’t like to do a lot of post processing but with some photo’s it just works!  I’ve also finally jumped on the instagr.am wagon so if you would like to come over and check out my daily photo’s you can find me there as hkpowers and it’s a lot of fun, I also love the square format which I’ve been told “works” with my sense of composition!

Grand Dame in Pink (Magnolia)

Coming and Going (Rose of Sharon or Hibiscus)

Grand Gardenia

Here to heaven (Jasmine)

These four white summer stunners are favorites.  I couldn’t grow Gardenia or Jasmine in the DC metro area but their fragrances are locked into my memory of summer and take me back to my days of living in Savannah and upstate GA where we had Gardenia’s growing outside our bedroom windows.  The sent of both is divine, but my all time favorite flower is Gardenia.  A few years ago I was lucky to be in Argentina on my birthday and they were blooming, what a wonderful birthday gift!  All of these are just about done blooming down here in zone 8 but we still have lot’s of other summer bloomers on the way.  What’s blooming where you live today?

Texture Tuesday::Natures Inspiration

by heatherkp

Lately I’ve been feeling a bit scattered, splattered and smothered so I’ve been seeking solace in natures beauty.  Luckily the opportunities for natures inspiration are everywhere just outside my doorstep!

To me April is always about soaking in natures beauty, celebrating the bounty, digging into the soil and watching the miracle of life emerge after winter’s rest.  This is a time of wonder, taking it all in and the appreciation of beauty…the hard work and the reflection are right down the road but for now it’s all about the inspiration, the enjoyment and the wonder of spring’s beauty!  With the ocean so close by and  spring the flowers in full bloom I have no excuses and am claiming it as my right to soak it in!

Lately I’ve been posting less frequently and haven’t been going very in depth about what’s happening with life and business but it’s one of those times in life when I’m going with the flow and soaking it all in.  The time to share everything bubbling beneath the surface will reveal itself when it’s right.  In the meantime, I’m here,  getting inspired and enjoying sharing some of that inspiration with you.

PS. This weeks texture used is Oh My by Kim Klassen.  Do go check out her amazing photography and textures!

Texture Tuesday::Spring B&W eDition

by heatherkp

It’s Spring!  I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way the seasons have shifted.  Two weeks ago it was very windy and chilly on the beach but this week is glorious!  Things have really begun to change at the beach as the seasonal visitors have started to arrive.  This week marks the first spring break for some schools and there are college kids, families and couples enjoying the beach now.  I’ve got to face the fact that along with the nicer weather comes many more visitors, no more solitary beach walks now that spring has arrived!

Texture Tuesday::Solitary Beach Sunset (Kim Klassen Textures-ScratchedMagicJuly, Storm & WonderfulMagic)

I haven’t been here much lately and my posting has been inconsistent and not always focused and I’m sorry for that.  I hope I don’t come across as flaky or too unfocused because I’m pretty clear on my path ahead!  We are very busy as we wrap up our time living at the beach and look for part time jobs and housing as well as prepare to relaunch our businesses down in Charleston soon.   We’ve also been doing some work and spring cleaning around my in-laws to help out and of course tax prep has been underfoot!  This is the time of year I always do a wardrobe switch and even though I have a pretty through inventory of all our boxes in storage, locating summer clothes has been a challenge for me!  There are 2 boxes in there somewhere that contain shorts and casual short sleeve shirts…goodness I hope we don’t have to dig too far back to find them!  Happy Spring!!

Texture Tuesday~Filled with Love

by heatherkp

Happy Valentines Day!

“Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.”– Anonymous

“Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.” — Zora Neale Hurston

I was very close to spending today with out my dear valentine but alas fate swept in at the last minute and changed our plans so we will be together.

“Whoso loves, believes the impossible.” — Elizabeth Barret Browning

“We need not think alike to love alike.” — Francis David

I hope each of you has someone you love to share this special day with.  If they are not with you in person, please always remember none of us are ever alone!

“Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.”– Cole Porter

Today isn’t so much about romantic love, dates, sharing greeting cards and the media filled attention that Valentines day gets as it is about really appreciating the love we receive from others and inviting love into our hearts and lives on a moment by moment basis.

Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit.  -Peter Ustinov

PS. Don’t you just love these tulips?  They came my way via a dear friend who works for a florist and she was thoughtful enough to share them with me.

Making room for Dreams!

by heatherkp

Wow, January went by fast!   Instead of setting a bunch of goals and resolutions for myself I decided to take a different approach to preparing myself for the year to come.  A big reason for our move to SC is to live the life we have DREAMED of living!  So, I’ve spent the better part of the month digging deeper, visioning, exploring the possibilities and really allowing myself to dream of what my life can be if I get out of my own way!

I love what Kahlil Gibran writes about dreams in The Garden of the Prophet; “You grow in sleep, and live your fuller life in your dreaming.”

I am exercising my ability to open to my dreams is by taking the online Mondo Beyondo Dream Big in the New Year course.  So far we are about half way through and the daily exercises have invited me to explore my hidden dreams.  What I’ve come to realize is that sometime after graduation from college I kind of forgot how to dream!   This may sound crazy but when I left school I had dreams of becoming a well known designer, designing my own line of products (or license designs) and traveling to exciting and inspiring locations.  Part of this dream came true but I also let insecurity creep in and listened to the naysayers until I eventually buried my own dreams in the daily grind.  It’s taken some coaxing but I’m slowly un burying those dreams, bringing them back to the surface, inviting the possibility of new dreams into my life and casting off the ones that I’ve decided I no longer need to hold onto.

Creating a vision board is one powerful way I’m expressing what I dream for my life.  In the past I’ve done vision boards with images but this time I decided to stick with words, which were easier to find and I added my own where I could not find them in magazines etc.  Words are very powerful and now I’ve got this vision board in a place where I can be reminded every day what I’m attracting into my life.

I am learning that allowing myself to dream involves faith and casting aside my worries.  I took this literally and wrote each worry on a shell and cast them into the ocean.  Now, each time a worry automatically creeps in and threatens those tender sprout’s of my dreams I remember that I’m no longer going to feed my worries, they are gone, out of my hands and cast to the sea.

As I’ve been exploring the possibilities of my dreams I’ve met some fantastic people including Business Coach, Mary Anna Lewis.  During a Dreams and Visions strategy session with her I wrote out “my perfect day” which was a truly powerful exercise!  I invite you go give it a try.  You can use any format you like, I used a letter as if I was writing to a dear friend who I hadn’t spoken to in awhile, telling them all about my life in general and explaining in more detail about how I spend a typical day.  I was asked to share this letter with the other participants that day and voicing it out loud gave it even more power Eveyone in that room said they could see me living it!

Texture Tuesday-Kim Klassen “Confidence” texture (one of several layers)

Allowing yourself to really dream can be a scary proposition for some people.  If you haven’t actively allowed yourself to dream for awhile it might take some practice to get back into that place where you can let go of your own limitations, worries and rules.  When was the last time you sat down and wrote down some dreams?  Isn’t it time you do so?  Don’t let your life go by without really living the life you’ve dreamed of!

Texture Tuesday::A Beetle Story

by heatherkp

Last weekend we went on a camping and canoeing trip to Givhans Ferry, SC State park.  We stayed in one of the cabins right along the Edisto river.  This river is one of the longest Blackwater rivers in the country and is lined on both shores with beautiful cypress trees and limestone bluffs.

This big black scarab beetle was found by my husband in an oak log as he collected wood for a campfire last weekend.  The guys picked it up wearing gloves and brought it into the bathroom where we gave it a bath, we wanted him/her to be photo-op ready!  I got this shot of it while he hung out in the sink not having much to grip onto.  I applied a couple texture layers to the background to enhance the “story” behind this rhinoceros beetle (Phileurus truncatus Phileurini).  Pretty good looking (especially those back wings) don’t you think?   I would never want to bring it with me (unless it was dead) so it was returned to the woods along the river where it was found.  And that’s the short story that we know about finding this rhino beetle.

I love macro photography!

Texture Tuesday::Open and Exploring

by heatherkp

Today’s Texture Tuesday image is inspired by the possibility of “open”-ness.  When we are open we can access all that is available to us to move with freedom and ease. I’m feeling very open to new ideas and new directions!

…and speaking of exploration and new ideas I’ve been spending time on the beach nearly every day!  This has been a gift and rather than feel like I “should” be doing something else with my time I’m keeping myself busy getting exercise, practicing my photography skills and getting totally inspired!  One of the many things on the beach I’ve been inspired by is all the textures.  I’ve started a series of photographs that investigate the wide variety of textures I find on the beach.  Eventually I’ll be working these photographs into designs of some sort.

I can see some amazing textiles and rugs coming from these images, can’t you?

One Little Word 2012::SOAR

by heatherkp

I began the year up in the clouds at 3100′ elevation and I’ve been watching the birds soar at the beach so I know this is the right word for me for 2012.  I’ll share a little more about why later but for today I just wanted to stop in with this image and say Happy 2012!

This year I intend to SOAR!  What is your intention for the year?  Right Here is a fantastic comprehensive list of word ideas if you haven’t picked a word for the year yet.

Texture Tuesday::Duet of Dahlia’s

by heatherkp

Last week I took my new Canon 60D out to the National Capital Dahlia Society‘s demo garden (which happens to be right next to the Master Gardeners demo garden:).  This is the time of the year when Dahlia’s are at their most spectacular!  I had taken a few other trips to the garden but didn’t have the time or equipment to dedicate to a photo shoot on those occasions.  Last Thursday was perfect weather though and I was not disappointed!

Dahlia’s were the flowers I wanted most at my wedding.  I tried to  locate a local farm who could supply us with all the flowers but I couldn’t make that happen.  I did have Dahlia’s in the wedding though and in my bouquet.  They are one of my favorite cut flowers and I find all the different forms spectacularly beautiful with their folded petals that unfurl and open to the sun.  I’ve thoroughly enjoyed visiting this garden every fall to see these beauties while living here.  Maybe someday I will grow some of my own.  For now they will be everlasting in my photo’s.

Today’s images are edited using layers of Kim Klassen’s textures.  Check out her blog for other amazing photo’s and textures!
